Verizon Pixel 2 Xl Can I Switch Back & Forth to Google Project Fi

  1. jimmiekain's Avatar

So... right now I have a Nexus 6p and I use it on AT&T. I hate that fact that the HD Voice and VoLTE do not work on the N6p when used on att. For these reasons and a few others, I'm considering a switch to Tmo or Vzw when / if I get the Pix2.

Can a few of you let me know what carrier you use and the following? This will help me choose what carrier to switch to or if I should stick with ATT.

    1. Does HD Voice work on your carrier? (Explained: If you call someone else with the same carrier you have is it a super crisp HD phone call? Or, does it sound normal?)

    2. Does VoLTE work? (Explained: When in a LTE area and not connected to wifi if you make or receive a phone call does your Pix2 data connection change to H, Ev or, does it still say LTE?

Thanks for all of your help guys.

    1) HD Voice will work on T-Mobile & Verizon. It will not work on AT&T / Sprint.

    2) VoLTE will work on T-Mobile & Verizon. It will not work on AT&T / Sprint.

    3) An extra one I know I cheated ... WiFi calling will work on T-Mobile & Verizon. It will not work on AT&T / Sprint.

Sprint doesn't allow it since they want their software. AT&T is the same reason... although I know AT&T could do it easily since T-Mobile does. Not sure on Sprint doing it easily. I would think so but their network is a little weird when it comes to restrictions versus others.

Another extra with T-Mobile is that Android's native Visual Voicemail works with T-Mobile.

On TMobile, everything works, even video calling. Not sure about advanced messaging

    Duo? Or carrier video calling?

Carrier, I don't have duo enabled. When I try to initiate a video call the menu pops up for video calls, plus under the pixel secret settings video calls are provisioned for TMobile.

Other than the 2 issues listed, does the Pixel work well on AT&T?

Yes it does. It supports all the current LTE bands they are using.

Can anyone confirm if tap-to-wake and lift-to-wake work on the Pixel 2? Possibly switching over from Galaxy S8 and I love the ability to press the invisible home button when it's asleep and just check the lock screen for notifications.

If I buy the unlocked version and use it on Verizon, will wifi calling work?

My XL works okay on AT&T, except the signal is garbage. It shows 5-10 db less than my other phones with the same sim in the same location. Combined with terrible battery life and the screen issues, it is probably going back.

Wow, I get great signal strength on TMobile and excellent battery life, my last charge had over 8 hrs screen time and 24hrs standby time.

I'm seeing the opposite compared to my Samsung S7 -vs- my P2. I'm getting much better signal. I don't have the XL version, just the smaller Pixel 2.

Also, ran a speed test and I'm getting 115 down, 18 up, so speeds are solid.

From my experience...VoLTE via Verizon may be skiddish at best...IF your Nexus 6P is on a beta version of an OS update. For me it was this way.

It's fine now. If you are on beta software and have issues it kind of makes sense. On stable software it should be fine.

    Not anymore for me...

    1. The beta program has paused while the official build is out for my Nexus 6P [so that is good in regards to VZW].

    2. After bouncing back and forth from T-Mobile, Verizon, and Project Fi...I have decided to keep my main and original number with Project Fi. I think I will eventually get a secondary SIM through T-Mobile, because I still want to try various unlocked devices sold in and out of the states, and T-Mobile offers the most "freedom" when I comes to a SIM card that will work in [GSM] devices of the world.

Bonus: I'm eager to see how the eSIM technology works on my Pixel 2 XL 🧐

So, the issue appears to be the phone's LTE band selection. The XL likes to stay on AT&T band 2, while the other phones spend more time on band 5. The signal for band 5 is stronger. When they are on the same band, (the XL switches to 5 or the others switch to 2) the signal strength is comparable. Why they don't stay on the stronger band 5 is beyond me. It looks like my battery life is getting better than it was yesterday and this morning, too.

I like At&t got 81MB down and 23MB up today, that's faster than my FiOS. For call I use a headset and it sounds great without HD calling.
    $161 for 3 lines , unlimited/calls/texts and hotspot. 30GB unthrottled shared data.

    Is there a cheaper plan?
(This was a special 30GB for 15GB deal, that's no longer available. Along with my 24% FAN)

    But yes...they are a$$$les 😃
